A couple of years ago, I wrote about God speaking to me through songs. (Lord, Won't You Buy Me A Mercedes-Benz) It's been a while since He used songs to communicate with me.
However, last month he spoke to me like that again.
I was in the hospital, recovering from having a kidney stone removed, on antibiotics for infection, and getting oxygen due to an allergic reaction. I dozed most of the first few days and don't remember much of what happened. However, I do remember waking up, hearing a quiet voice singing this in my spirit.
"I will take care of you.
Through every day, o're all the way.
I will take care of you.
God will take care of you!"
That reassurance gave me peace throughout the rest of my stay in the hospital and after I got home. When worry or fear comes at me, I remember that quiet voice singing, and peace returns.
Psalm 16:7 tells us the Lord instructs us at night. Job 33:14-16 says that while we sleep, God opens our ears to instruct us.
I will bless the Lord, Who has given me counsel; yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.
Psalm 16:7
“For God speaks once,
And even twice, yet no one notices it [including you, Job].
“In a dream, a vision of the night [one may hear God’s voice],
When deep sleep falls on men
While slumbering upon the bed,
Then He opens the ears of men
And seals their instruction
Job 33:14-16 AMP
I believe the instruction I received was to trust and rest in the Lord because He was taking care of me.
I remember singing this hymn in church when I was growing up. The story behind this hymn is as inspiring as the hymn itself.
It was written by Civilla Durfee Martin, a schoolteacher and musician who often collaborated with her husband, Walter, to write gospel songs. While at the Practical Bible Training School in Lestershire, New York, Civilla fell ill one Sunday morning.
Walter, a Baptist evangelist, considered canceling his sermon to stay with her. Their young son reminded them that if God wanted Walter to preach, He would take care of Civilla.
Inspired by her son, Civilla wrote the lyrics to "God Will Take Care of You" that afternoon. When he returned home, Walter set the words to music on his organ. That evening, he and two teachers sang the song, which was included in a songbook they compiled.
With each verse, God has continued to use this hymn to reassure me that He is and will continue to take care of me.
Maybe you haven't heard God sing this hymn over you. That's okay; He led you to this blog. He speaks to us in many different ways, and today, as you read this, He is reassuring you that He will take care of you. Be at peace, beloved child of God. Do not be dismayed by whatever your situation is.
GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!

God Will Take Care of You
Lyrics by C. D. Martin, 1904
Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
Refrain:
God will take care of you,
Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.
Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.
All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied,
God will take care of you.
No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you.
