The tongue is a marvelous organ in our mouth that serves several purposes. It manipulates food for chewing, and is used in the act of swallowing. It is the primary organ of taste, housing taste buds that allow us to detect substances that are sweet, bitter, salty, sour, spicy, or savory. It is with our tongue that we enjoy the nutrients needed to keep our bodies healthy. Aren't you glad God included taste buds when He made us? Imagine never tasting coffee or chocolate! I'm glad He wanted us to enjoy the food we eat.
But the wonders of the marvelous tongue doesn't stop there. The muscles of the tongue enable it to move in ways which allow us to form words and speak. James 3:5 tells us the tongue is but a small part of the body, yet it carries great power! That power is speech, the power of our words.
The world was created by words spoken by God. We are His children and have inherited some of that same power. As caretakers of earth, we are to use our words to rule in it. Therefore we must chose our words carefully because they have the power to shape the world we live in.
Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live. Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]
Even those who don't believe in God recognize this truth. Look at all the self help and motivational books and teaching on the power of positive affirmations. There are oodles on using your words and self talk to live your dreams. All of this is good, however it is missing one important fact. The natural man without God cannot tame our tongue.
8 but the tongue is not able to be tamed. It’s a fickle, unrestrained evil that spews out words full of toxic poison! 9 We use our tongue to praise God our Father and then turn around and curse a person who was made in his very image! 10 Out of the same mouth we pour out words of praise one minute and curses the next. My brothers and sister, this should never be! James 3:8-10 TPT
How many times a day do we speak death and destruction over our life without realizing it? What kind of curses do we let loose when we are angry or get hurt? Think about what you said the last time you stubbed your toe or hit your funny bone. Were the words that came out of your mouth blessings or curses? These are the words that shape our life as much as the positive affirmations we speak. We also told out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and in that a double minded man receives nothing from the Lord. If you find yourself in this situation, repent!
The good new is that with God all things are possible. We can train our tongue with the help of Holy Spirit. Then our decrees and positive affirmation will produce the fruit we desire. When our words align with what God is saying, then we can command what He has said to manifest from the supernatural to the natural realm.
Job 22:28 says, “You shall decree a thing, and it shall be established for you; And light shall shine upon your ways.”
Oh, the marvelous tongue. It deserves a book of it own, and many have been written. As a young woman I read The Power of Your Words by E. W. Kenyon. It opened my eyes to how much death and destruction was being spoken, even by us Christians. I encourage you to ask Holy Spirit to alert you to the words of death you may be speaking over your life. Then allow Him to help you train your tongue. I believe this is a vital part of seeing the Lord's Prayer answered: "Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven."

Thank you for this encouraging reminder about words, especially the words we use about ourselves. I hope you have a lovely day!
